Musical Discoveries is a course of pre-piano musicianship classes for 4 and 5 year olds. In these classes children learn the foundations of music through movement, singing and multisensory activities allowing them to experience music in a variety of ways. Lessons are fun and energetic with a high emphasis placed on encouraging each individual’s natural musicality and creativity.

During these classes children will:

Classes take place once a week for 45 minutes in groups of 4-5 children. Although they are primarily designed as pre-piano classes they will give all children a strong musical foundation for whatever instrument they go on to play.

Why pre-piano classes?

Playing a musical instrument requires a number of skills- a good sense of pulse and rhythm, good coordination, the ability to listen effectively, the ability to read and interpret musical symbols, and the ability to do all these things and more at the same time! Pre-piano classes give children the opportunity to learn in a fun, relaxed environment and to develop these skills individually before applying them to an instrument. Learning the skills now will allow them to progress faster and further when they do eventually start playing. The classes allow children to focus on learning one musical concept at a time, building a firm foundation for the work that follows. Working in a group context allows them to learn through play and in community with other children whilst developing social skills. The classes are designed to develop children’s confidence in singing and composing, enabling them to be more expressive and creative on their chosen instrument in the future.

How to arrange lessons

Due to the nature of the curriculum, Musical Discoveries classes start in September each year and run through to the following July.  Whilst children enrolled in classes are able to leave at any point in the year if necessary, unfortunately it is not possible for children to join part way through the year.  If you are interested in enrolling your child for lessons starting in September then please contact us via phone or email and we will be happy to send you a Welcome Pack, giving you more information about the classes and how to enroll.  If you and your child would like to observe a lesson in action then please let us know.

  • I like going to music because it makes me happy and I like learning the songs.

    Benjamin – Aged 5
  • Friends and family are really impressed with what and how they learn, as some of the lessons they talk about are just about working through a book and learning each piece one at a time. Amrit and Gurjeevan love telling everyone about their fun lessons and talk about their compositions with pride!  I cannot thank you enough for all your time and attention to the two of them.  It has given them both so much confidence in themselves and they are so proud of what they are achieving.  As parents, we couldn’t be happier.

  • We have seen Jordan grow in confidence over the past year and the group nights as well as the concerts have played a huge part in stretching him and building up his self belief and confidence.  This was noticeable over the festive period when at church Jordan played 2nd keys for our carol service in front of a packed house.  This he wouldn’t have done without your help over the past year so thank you and keep up the good work!

  • I loved playing games like ‘Cuckoo where are you?’ and ‘Doggy with the bone’.

    Phoebe – Aged 5
  • Daisy enjoys her classes immensely and looks forward to her lessons each week.

  • A fun way to learn all about music.  The children sing, dance and play different instruments all in a relaxed and friendly environment.  After the lessons none of the children are in a rush to go home!

  • As the parent of a child who had never played piano before, I found the teacher to be delightful and patient and their lessons to be engaging and at an appropriate level for my daughter.  The fact that the main emphasis of CCPT appears to be on engaging the student and not about their ability level makes it the perfect environment to learn in!
